So, my friend asked if I wanted to participate in a HIV/AIDS-related project, as a erm … “testee”.
I was told that I could choose to be anonymous, which is a huge relief. I wonder what my pseudonym will be. Candy? Delilah? Dolphin? (I swear this is a real person’s name).
Now, I finally get to be the person with an asterisk to their identity that you often read in the papers:
“Candy*, 19 years old, has multiple sexual partners. (Names have been changed …).”
I think I will go with the pseudonym –Ashvina, becuase I like that name.
And here’s some other info so you can try to crack your heads and figure out who I am. =)
* I’m 25 years old
* I work in the “oh-so-glam” media industry
* I grew up in KL
* I enjoy watching movies, dancing, eating and travelling
Honestly, it has NEVER crossed my mind that I could be HIV positive. All my relationships are always monogamous (at least I hope so) and I don’t consume drugs intravenously.
So, seriously, what are my chances? I mean, if anything, I’ve always been more worried about getting pregnant than contracting HIV. I have had erm, spur of the moment sex with someone I didn’t know all too well, but it was safe sex.
Even with my partners, 90% of the time I use a condom. I was going to say I ALWAYS use a condom, but that would not be honest. And since I haven’t shown any symptoms of dying, I figure I should be safe.
So, I guess to be very honest I am doing this as a favour to my friend. My personal philosophy is: if a friend believes in a certain cause and it doesn’t contradict my own values, I will always try to support them, because after all there’s a reason why it’s close to their heart.
Also, I think it’d be a very good chance to find out what it feels like to be a person who thinks they have HIV, and is going for a test that will determine the outcome of the next few years of their life. I’m right now trying to psych myself … so I have googled “Early Symptoms of HIV in women”
…..AND AM NOW STARTNG TO FREAK OUT!!!!!!!!
AAAHHHH…backfire!!!!!!!!
…..swollen lymph nodes (check – been having that for a few weeks now)
…..flu (erm…does sinusitis count?)
…..headache (CHECK!!!)
……worst of all the website says: “More persistent or severe symptoms may not appear for 10 years or more”
Now I damn tension…
I tell myself: Ashvina, relax. You’re still in contact with the people you have had sexual relationships with and they seem in peachy perfect health.
Will try not to worry … am going for the medical test soon!!!
