Eugene’s Diary

went to a private clinic in Ampang, Kuala Lumpur, to be tested. Although I had made inquiries before I went in for the test, I was still terrified. The receptionist told me that if there were no complications, the results would be ready in a few days. Complications? Great, one more thing to stress and worry about.
But I was there for the test, so I went through it!
I must say it was hardly as frightening as I expected it to be, although I am now stressed and worried about the results. During the test, I had moments when I questioned why I agreed to this project, and wondered if I should have chickened out when I had the chance.
In doing my research, I chose not to go to a Government clinic for a few reasons. I read articles online that they are not so stringent about protecting patients’ confidentiality. I wasn’t sure if this was true but it wasn’t something I wanted to risk.
I also tried talking to people about taking a HIV test, but not many people bothered. Even the few who are sexually active or had had unprotected sex did not appear to be interested.
I wish my peers would take HIV/AIDS more seriously because it is a very serious issue that could potentially change their lives. I squirmed when I wrote this last line as I think about my own test. We will just have to see how that turns out.
