Fashion fail-safes

There are a few things a girl must have in her wardrobe.WHEN I’m in a boutique deciding whether I should splurge on a particular item of clothing, I always worry about whether years, or even months, from now they’ll still be in style.
We’ve seen our share of dreadful fashion pieces that came, went, and haven’t come back (except maybe to Japan – anything goes over there) like striped leggings and bicycle tights, and it is comforting to know that whatever the season, there are several styles you can always rely on to be timeless.
Here’s a list of items and looks that have never – and will probably not – go out of style anytime soon.
White shirt and blue jeans
This look will be recyclable for decades to come. When all other looks fail, this is the one casual look you can always rely on to take you through the day.
White suits everyone, and so do jeans. This look also gives you the freedom to either chic-it-up with heels, or go casual with sneakers.
Black heels
These are so versatile and they’ll never be on the “fashion faux pas” list. I have a pair of black shoes I bought for a church choir performance 10 years ago, which still fit me and with a lot of polishingover the years, has lasted until now.
They’ve taken me through both my graduation ceremonies, numerous church and university functions, and on work days when I just feel like being comfortable, I dig them out of my wardrobe and put them on.
The cardigan
One of my personal favourites, this item of clothing can be worn with anything and as long as you don’t pair it with grandma gear like wooly jumpers, it’s sure to be a hit.
Jeans, skirts, dresses, you name it, the cardigan goes with it. Even cocktail dresses can be paired with cardigans, as long as they’re the right colour and cut.
The LBD
That stands for Little Black Dress, and as long as your size doesn’t fluctuate too much over the years, it can be worn again and again.
An LBD is usually a very basic design – a sheath dress that’s cut just above the knee. These days it can also be a tube dress, sleeveless and even assymetrical. Audrey Hepburn’s LBD in Breakfast At Tiffany’s is a design that women have been working for years.
Change it up with different accessories, shoes and bags and no one will know it is the same dress you’ve been wearing for years!
Pencil skirt
Ah, the wonders you can work with a simple skirt. For work, pair it with a blouse and sensible shoes; for a night out, a sexy top; and for important work functions, a blazer.
A great item you should invest in, it will always have a place in your wardrobe.
